Dentist warns public vs. using teeth as bottle cap opener

A dentist warned the public against using their teeth to open a bottle cap since it can damage the teeth.

In a Thursday report on Kuya Kim’s segment on “24 Oras,” Ronalyn Cortez went viral online through a video that showed her using her teeth to open soft drink bottles at a wedding reception in Ballesteros, Cagayan.

Cortez said since the bottle opener was broken, she used her teeth.

She added that despite opening so many bottles, her teeth were not damaged.

Enamel or the other part of the teeth, is the strongest human body part. It is stronger than the bones because it has a high concentration of minerals like hydroxyapatite, a type of calcium phosphate.

However, it cannot regenerate once it is damaged, so opening a bottle of soft drinks is dangerous for the teeth.

Dentist Maureen Ines-Manzano said, “Napakamapanganib pag nabali ito maputol siya, hindi na ito maikakabit pa.”

(It’s very dangerous if it breaks; if it breaks, this cannot be reattached.)

“Kapag nabali ang ngipin papasukan ngayon ng mikrobyo. Magkaka infection naman yung gilagid. Tandaan na ang ngipin ay ginagamit lamang sa pagnguya,” she added.

(When a tooth is damaged, bacteria will enter, and the gums will also be infected. Remember that teeth are only used for chewing.)

Using the teeth to remove the bottle cap can also lead to damage to the jaw.

“Yung force o yung trauma, yung impact ng pagkakagat ay magkakaroon ng epekto dito sa jaw natin,” Ines-Manzano said.

(The force, trauma, or impact of the bite will affect our jaws.)

She said that it is better to use the proper tools to open a bottle.
