Public urged to heed gov’t advisories on extreme heat

An official from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) on Wednesday reminded the public to follow the advisories released by government agencies amid the increasing temperature in the country.

In an interview with GMA News Online, Dr. Marvin Manzano, officer-in-charge of OCD Research Doctrine Division, said these advisories will help the public prepare for the hot weather.

“Laging tingnan at maging aware sa public information or advisories na nilalabas ng pamahalaan lalo na yung concerned agencies like PHIVOLCS, PAGASA and OCD, na ina- amplify yung mga warnings natin,” Manzano said.

(Always check and be aware of the public information or advisories released by the government, especially the PHIVOLCS, PAGASA, and the OCD, that amplify public warnings.)

“Itong mga abiso na ito dapat nilang seryosohin at, the same time, dapat nilang unawain dahil nagbibigay tayo ng advisories para sa kapakanan nila, kasi by the end of the day tayo rin dapat ang tumugon sa ganitong sitwasyon,” he added.

(The public should take these advisories seriously and, at the same time, understand that these are for their safety because at the end of the day, we are the ones responding to these situations.)

State weather bureau PAGASA predicted that
17 areas
in the country will have a “danger level” heat index on Wednesday, April 30.

PAGASA categorizes areas with a 42°C to 51°C heat index in the “danger” category, with a risk for heat stroke.

The Department of Health advised Filipinos who have prolonged
sun exposure
to drink as much as 10 glasses of water daily, with the heat index reaching up to a dangerous 50°C in some areas in the country.

Meanwhile, OCD has activated its
emergency response protocols
, prompting its regional offices to be alert and working closely with local authorities to provide immediate assistance and ensure public safety amid the dangerous heat index.
