Campos backs satellite internet to bridge digital divide in remote schools

Makati City Rep. Luis Campos Jr. has voiced strong support for expanding satellite internet access to public schools in remote and underserved parts of the Philippines, saying the technology could help address longstanding digital gaps in education.

“Our goal must be to ensure that no learner is left behind simply because of geography,” Campos said. “By harnessing the power of satellite internet services, we can overcome physical barriers and bring digital access to schools that have long been out of reach of traditional infrastructure.”

The lawmaker said satellite connectivity offers a practical and scalable solution for bringing internet service to geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, where conventional broadband has been slow or impossible to roll out. He urged stakeholders to accelerate efforts to improve the country’s digital learning infrastructure.

“Investing in advanced solutions like satellite technology is not only timely—it is essential,” Campos said, commending the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and its partners for exploring alternatives to traditional connectivity options.

Campos is also backing legislation that would push regulators to require faster mobile internet speeds from telecommunications firms, citing the link between digital connectivity and national productivity. He said slow internet results in “significant economic and personal efficiency losses.”

He continues to advocate for the Free Wi-Fi for All program, which aims to build tens of thousands of free public internet hotspots across the country. The DICT recently announced plans to use satellite services to connect up to 15,000 of the most remote public schools.

“Our children deserve the best tools to learn, regardless of where they live,” Campos said. “Let us work together to make this vision a reality.”

Campos is running for mayor of Makati in the upcoming midterm elections, while his wife, Mayor Abby Binay, is seeking a Senate seat.
