MANILA, Philippines — Several people were injured after a black SUV plowed into the departure entrance of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 on Sunday, causing chaos and prompting an immediate security lockdown.
Based on initial reports from the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), the airport’s operator, the SUV broke through the outer railing at the departure area before slamming into the walkway near the terminal entrance. The impact caused significant damage and left multiple individuals hurt.
“The area has been secured, and access is now restricted to NNIC personnel, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and airport security while investigations are underway,” the NNIC said in a statement.
Authorities confirmed that those injured in the incident were being treated. The driver of the SUV has been apprehended and is now under PNP custody.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon swiftly arrived at the NAIA Terminal 1 to assess the situation, underscoring the gravity of the incident.
As images and videos of the crash circulated on social media sparking concern among travelers and the public, the NNIC appealed for calm.
“We understand the concern this incident has caused, especially as images have circulated online. We urge the public to wait for verified updates,” it said.
San Miguel Corporation (SMC), which oversees NAIA operations, also issued a statement confirming the incident and assuring the public that a full investigation is ongoing.
“We are closely coordinating with all concerned agencies to gather accurate information. At this time, we await official confirmation on the cause of the incident and the extent of injuries,” SMC said.
