Spotify Returns After Hours-Long Outage Disrupts Thousands of Users

NEW YORK — On Wednesday, Spotify faced a major disruption as numerous users reported issues with the widely-used music and podcast streaming service. However, the company announced that it had resumed operations several hours afterward.

“Everything’s good now—thanks for bearing with us,” Spotify posted on X, previously called Twitter, shortly after midday Eastern Time. For those requiring additional help, they directed people to their support handle, @SpotifyCares.

In the morning, numerous Spotify users reported facing challenges with the application and desktop website not loading properly, as well as trouble playing or listening to music and utilizing the search feature. Besides these issues, reports indicated that certain individuals could not access the company’s support site, adding further frustration to their experience.

Spotify informed The Associated Press that the service disruption started at approximately 6:20 a.m. ET on Wednesday—but reported that it had been fully restored and was operating normally by 11:45 a.m. ET.

Service disruption alerts reached their highest point shortly after 9:30 a.m. ET, according to information from Downdetector, indicating that over 48,000 users were experiencing issues with Spotify. By early afternoon, fewer than 1,500 ongoing complaints remained.

Spotify did not promptly offer further details on what may have triggered the outage. However, the firm based in Stockholm had earlier mentioned that claims of this issue being due to a security breach are entirely incorrect.

Currently, Spotify has a user base exceeding 675 million people globally, with 263 million paying subscribers spread across more than 180 markets.
